The Year 6 children at Chapel Haddlesey Primary spent a day taking part in some Peer Mediator training with the aim of equipping them with the skills to deal with low level conflict in the playground.
To start with, they took part in role play situations to fully understand what is meant by conflict and learnt that they have a choice to resolve it or make it worse. The children considered the importance and value of listening and developed their listening skills; they also enjoyed activities to understand the different perspectives on situations to fully understand the mediation process.
Mrs Sylvia Free, teaching assistant, led the training and said, “The group really responded well to the role play tasks and activities involved in this training, sensibly and maturely considering responses to playground situations. Feedback from the children was positive, saying they had enjoyed the training and felt confident that they could help younger children in the playground”.
