Phoebe was recently lucky enough to attend the ‘BBC Radio 2 500 word’ final in London. Here is a report from her mum of her exciting day!
134,790 children entered the BBC Radio 2 500 word story competition. Out of these entrants, 3000 were invited to attend the live final at Hampton Court Palace for an extravaganza of live music and sensational story telling by celebrity narrators including David Walliams, Dara O’Briain, Jason Isaacs, Jim Broadbent and Amanda Abbington .
The day started very early with us arriving at Hampton Court Palace at 4.30am. We were then security checked and allowed into the courtyard to take our seats. We were very excited.
There was live music by John Newman, Bastille and Alexandra Burke and fun along the way with the bronze and silver stories being read out in between.
It was so interesting to hear the stories that were in the final.
Then a special person, Honorary Judge, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall arrived to the courtyard on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This was so exciting as the car stopped directly in front of us giving us the best view. The audience cheered and applauded her arrival.
Then the gold winners for each age category were announced and their stories were read out by David Walliams and Shobna Gulati.
At the end of the event the winners went off in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for a ride around the grounds and then to have lunch on the The Queen’s Row Barge ‘Gloriana’.
The whole experience was wonderful and one that we will not forget for a long time. However, the highlight has to be Phoebe getting the chance to meet her favourite author, David Walliams, who posed for a picture and signed her book.
